November: At The Market

by evh on November 14, 2013

November is a curious month when it comes to Texas weather. Even though the days are shorter they can still reach 80 degree temperatures while nights can dip below freezing –– hello, Jack Frost. This also makes for interesting market days. Tomatoes (yes, tomatoes!), okra and a few summer melons and squash are mixed in with root vegetables and hearty greens (go kale!). Apples, pears and persimmons are plentiful and the soup, baking and roasting season is in full swing.

What to expect at the farmer’s market this month:

  • sweet and crispy apples
  • pretty persimmons
  • pecked pears
  • jolly green beans
  • root-y radishes
  • intriguing eggplant
  • cool cucumbers
  • hot, hot, hot peppers
  • rainbow chard
  • sweet peppers
  • teary onions
  • peppery baby arugula
  • fresh salad greens
  • hearty kale
  • crunchy collards
  • buttery butternut squash
  • beet-y beets
  • cream peas
  • toasty pecans
  • creamy sweet potatoes
  • herbaceous herbs
  • flavorful red potatoes
  • “I am what I am” spinach
