January: At The Market

by evh on January 14, 2014

Oh Texas, you are so fickle this year, with your freezes, the occasional pouring rain and sprinklings of 80 degree weather — what’s a farmer to do? Or what’s a gardener to do? Cover, uncover and then cover the garden again between the raindrops and freezes, I guess. It’s citrus time here in Texas and hopefully the local farmers have come out on top during Mother Natures, ummm … indecisive moments. If you are able to get your hands on some citrus this month try this Texas Orange Poppyseed Vinaigrette on your next salad to keep your health resolutions in check. You may also find some hothouse strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers around the markets to give you just a little taste of what’s to come. Colorful cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, turnips are also in full swing so stock up.

What to expect at the farmer’s market this month:

  • outrageous oranges
  • sweet and tangy grapefruit – Texas Rios!
  • lemony lemons
  • tangy tangerines
  • lushy leeks
  • funny fennel
  • krunchy kale
  • bok bok bok choy
  • trees o’ broccoli
  • flowery cauliflower
  • vampire-ous garlic
  • wintry squash
  • beety beets
  • turn-it-up turnips
  • teary onions
  • peppery baby arugula
  • colly collard greens
  • fresh salad greens
  • brussely Brussels sprouts
  • crunchy cabbage
  • toasty pecans
  • creamy sweet potatoes
  • herbaceous herbs – cilantro, parsley, rosemary
