Healthy Orange Creamsicle Smoothie ~ I started out the year (as I did last year) thinking that we would sort of ease into it. You know, take it easy, not over schedule anything, and spend more time just relaxing after the busy holidays. Ha! I really don’t know where I got this grand delusion from as this January is already proving to be more hectic than last. It is because of this, and the fact that the cold and flu season seems to be still lingering about, that I have been trying to consume more bits of Vitamin B12, D, and C anywhere I can to stay healthy. These last couple of weeks I have been helping out at my son’s school, and while I adore the kiddos I have come to the realization that kids (no matter how cute) are just plain gross. A runny noes here, an uncovered cough there, and germ-y hands lurking pretty much everywhere –– I feel like teachers must have stomachs and immune systems of steel and that I need a hose down after being on campus. Once mom goes down, everybody seems to go down and we can’t have any of that, right?

I have long been a big fan of the blend of orange with cream. As a kid, my mom would “treat” us with an occasional Orange Julius blended drink (remember those?) –– chunky bits of crushed ice swirling alongside a creamy tang –– these were tasty times. I don’t even know if the Orange Julius place still exists but I have many fond memories of these icy drinks. With my current state of trying to be more cognizant of my own immune system and keeping all things healthy this month, I made this Healthy Orange Creamsicle Smoothie. Ingredients
  • 1 large orange
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 medium banana
  • 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 4 cups ice

Instructions
  1. Place ice into a blender. Peel and seed the orange and break up into segments. Place the segments into the blender over the ice. Next add orange juice, vanilla almond milk, banana, flax seed, honey, and salt.
  2. Blend on high speed for 30-40 seconds or until smooth and creamy. Serve.
