Book Giveaway: Living the Farm Sanctuary Life by Gene Baur ~ I have been an animal lover all of my life and over the years I have been known to have several animals follow me home –– dogs, cats, and rabbits to name a few. In my first year of college, on the long drive back after going home for the weekend to do my laundry (remember those days), I witnessed something that changed me forever. I saw a limp cow with his head and neck being dragged down a dirt road from the back of a pickup truck. To this day, I will never know if that cow was still alive or fully dead, but what I do know is that it had a big impact on my life and right then and there I became a vegetarian. The meer thought of animals being treated inhumanely baffles the mind and it’s not something that I want to, nor want my family to, be any part of.
I am no longer a vegetarian –– we do eat some fish and meats throughout the month –– but I do carefully select where those proteins come from. Are they treated well, fed a healthy diet, and locally raised? This is where “knowing your farmer” comes into play and these are my main priorities when choosing meat for my family.
Since the mid-1980s, author and animal activist Gene Baur has be at the helm of farm animal rights and treatment and has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. He has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production. Gene is not only an advocate for the animals and for living a plant-based diet lifestyle he is also the president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary.
Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in treatment toward animals and in our food system.
What is the Farm Sanctuary? It’s the world’s premier refuge for farm animals. Located at farms in New York and California, they provide comfortable homes for approximately 1,000 pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, sheep, and goats. Every year they host thousands of guests from all over the country who come to enjoy these extraordinary farms where people and animals interact as friends, companions, and playmates. None of these creatures is ever eaten or used to produce milk or eggs; they live fully and freely for the rest of their existence. This is a place that gives back something most of us have lost, and returns people to a simpler, happier time and place where we lived more in harmony with nature, other species, and our core values.
The Farm Sanctuary also does a great deal of serious educational work, such as keeping the public informed about the plight of factory-farmed animals. They host 100-plus events and appearances a year, many featuring celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres, Alec Baldwin, Mary Tyler Moore, Emily Deschanel, Moby, Chevy Chase, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Nealon, Steve-O, John Corbett, Allison Janney, Jesse Eisenberg, Jon Hamm, and others. And we lobby vigorously for laws and policies that support animal welfare.
The Farm Sanctuary has been dubbed “The Happiest Place on Earth” by many of it’s visitors and this book is designed to help you share in some of that happiness.
