A Local Savour Garden Update

by evh on December 5, 2011

Sure we had a large drought in Texas but a few good things actually came out of the drought – my basil runneth over in the garden! What were once tiny little basil plants struggling to survive in the ol’ back yard quickly became large basil bushes. So of course I HAD to make a copious batch of Local Savour Texas Pesto – YUM! Other things popping up now? Lots of herbs, Swiss chard and … tomatoes! Crazy, right? With December upon us, I’ve finally gotten some tomatoes – broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts will soon be on the way too.

Another drought plus? Texas apples found here. Smallish in size but packed full of crispy goodness (Jonagolds are at the top of my list this season and I can’t seem to get enough of them!) as were the wine grapes in our region. Look for the 2011 Texas Wineries vintages to be smaller in quantity but higher in quality – a good year to purchase so mark your calendars as they should start to release these beauties around late 2012 or early 2013.

As for the next season on the horizon – we shall see what happens in the garden with the nights getting colder and old man winter knocking at our door, let’s hope our tough vegetables can survive long enough for us to enjoy them.
